The National Museum of Australia wants stories of pony clubs to form part of its exhibition about horses in Australia.
Radio National’s Bush Telegraph has got behind the drive to find Australians with links to a pony club. They are being asked to share their experience as part of a National Museum of Australia exhibition on the history of horses in Australia.
Pictured left – a very famous Australian rider Megan Jones. The picture was taken on her first day at Pony Club.
The exhibition Spirited: Australia's Horse Story will open in Canberra next month, with plans to tour it regionally next years.
Curator Jenifer Wilson says it’s a chance to explain the influence horses have had on recent Australian history.
‘Horses have become so much a part of Australian life,' she said. 'If you look at the highways of Australia the distance between towns is actually the creation of distances that horses could travel before they had to be changed over when carrying a Cobb and Co coach.
'They actually set the pace and the rhythm of all of those different lifestyles, in the country, in the cities, in the towns.'
Included in the exhibition is a project dedicated to Australian pony clubs as told by members of the public.
‘To really do justice to the history of pony club in Australia we decided we’d actually look for the words and the stories of people across Australia and this seemed like a great way to do it,’ she said.
‘A lot of the campdrafters, the Olympians, even the farmers and pastoral property owners, pony club is part of their history as well.’
Olympian Megan Jones Pictured top left) began her riding career at a pony club in South Australia. Jones has loaned the silver medal from the Beijing games for the broader exhibition opening next month.'The medal itself is actually a little bit dented now and dirty and I haven't cleaned it because it's been touched by so many people and that's the way I like it.'
She’s also contributed her own story as part of the pony club project.
People with a pony club story can submit stories and photographs about their pony club experiences to build on the story of Australia’s horse history by visiting the my pony club story web site.To read te Radio National article, Go To: http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/bushtelegraph/museum-pony/5665624
