Three Aussies remain in jumping nomination series

Bela Baloubet

Following the weekend’s first nomination event in Mons Ghiln (BEL), three jumping combinations remain eligible for automatic nomination to the Australian team for the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG).

The battle for the two team positions available through automatic nomination is between London Olympian James Paterson-Robinson (Boris), London team reserve Amy Graham (Bella Baloubet) and 2013 Australian Show Jumping Champion Jamie Kermond (Quite Cassini) after the trio qualified and competed in Sunday’s Mons CSI4* Grand Prix.

In order to remain alive in the two round series, Australia’s WEG selection policy for Jumping requires the short listed combinations to compete in a nominated qualifier as well as the first round of the Grand Prix at each event.

With scores tight amongst the large international field in Friday’s nominated qualifier, five combinations on Australia’s short list of eight missed out on a start in the Grand Prix thereby ending their campaign for automatic nomination (see results from the qualifying class HERE). It does not signify the end of their WEG campaign and all riders remain in contention for discretionary nomination to the Australian team (see below for more information).

Following next weekend’s second and final nomination event at Spangenberg (GER), the top two ranked combinations from the three that remain will be awarded a position on the Australian team, so long as the total number of penalties they accumulate during the qualifier and Grand Prix from each nomination round is no greater than 20 (in accordance with the selection policy).

The three riders will start Spangenberg after accumulating the following penalties at Mons:

Amy Graham and Bella Baloubet – 8 (4 qualifying round + 4 GP 1st round)
Jamie Kermond and Quite Cassini – 9 (1 qualifying round + 8 GP 1st round)
James Paterson-Robinson and Boris – 12 (0 qualifying round + 12 GP 1st round)

Riders selected through this process will join Edwina Tops-Alexander who earned early nomination to the Australian team. Selectors will choose additional combinations to make up the team of five.
