National stage.

Paul Austin Pandemonium

Showing may not be an Olympic discipline but every year in December, the Australasian Show Horse and Rider National Championships held at Werribee Park represents the holy grail for showing enthusiasts and competitors alike.

This event has become the most prestigious Show Horse Championships in Australia and now including New Zealand. The daunting task of bringing horses from distant destinations, over the Nullarbor Plain, Bass Straight and the Tasman Sea has not deterred as this event has gone from strength to strength.

They all come to vie for the illusive title of best in Australasia in their respective classes. The honour of representing your state in any sport is a terrific achievement, just the Champion and Runner up from each of the single qualifying shows is eligible to compete at the Nationals.

Enjoying success at this year’s National Title show was Saddleworld Ipswich sponsored rider Paul Austin, incorporating his team aptly called ‘Paul Austin Equestrian’ is based just outside Brisbane.

Paul has enjoyed a long history of success at this show, winning many titles himself and riders he trains taking the ultimate prize of National Champion. Representing your state at this show is no easy feat, the hours of work, grooming, saddlery & training that must go into these horses is incredible, as is the cost.

This year Paul had a team of eight horses and two riders make the 3500km round trip to Werribee and back. The culmination of all of the hard work and kilometres comes down to just two and a half minutes in the ring, being scrutinised by three judges on a point score system. You need to make every second count, a skill Paul has down to a fine art. From the music selection to the movements each horse performs to the saddlery and equipment used, nothing is left to chance, competition is fierce and tough.

This year Paul was lucky enough to come home with a Runner Up title in the Large Hack Championship riding Pandemonium, a Warmblood Gelding owned by Lisa and Mackenzie Boundy, that just over 12 months ago was plucked from a dogger sale in NSW.

Marquise a Thoroughbred gelding that was the subject of the September Horse Deals Off The Track Feature Story earned himself the title of 3rd in the Small Hack Championship.

Paul’s horses compete in Trainers Jessica Pro & Royal Show Saddles.

The 2013 National Title show saw amongst other awards, Paul taking out a commendable 3rd on Ipswich Store Owner Emily Wonka’s Dicavalli Delta in the Small Show Hunter Horse Championship, Mikayla Van Kampen – a Saddleworld Ipswich Sponsored rider taking out the Intermediate Riding Championship, Chicago & Paul Austin also taking out the Runner Up Large Hack Championship.
